WHY:
I once went to a support group for empaths. We went around the room introducing ourselves, sharing a bit of information about why we were there and what we were hoping to take away from the gathering. It was so comforting to be around others who understood what I had been going through my whole life.
Were they...
At one point, a woman started to talk about how much anxiety she usually experienced in social situations. As she was calling attention to her nervousness, it naturally increased until she became visibly distraught. Then, in an almost comical manner (comical now, at least), that anxiety began to spread around the circle as other people picked up on it and expressed just how anxious they were suddenly feeling too. At some point, I just couldn't help myself and spoke up quite emphatically, "Ok! Just because you can feel what someone else is feeling DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO."
It was an important reminder for all of us that being empathic doesn't mean we must take on what others are experiencing. It's actually the opposite of what many of us have been taught. In order to really be of service to anyone, we must keep ourselves balanced and centered in our own energetic body. And we always have control over our own energetic body. We just have to learn how and practice.
Were they...
- usually overwhelmed in large crowds of people? Yes.
- incredibly irritated by loud noises, bright lights, and certain smells and textures? Yes.
- the emotional confidante/counselor - from a very young age - for family members, friends, and total strangers? Yes.
- a psychic sponge, easily picking up the emotions and feelings of everyone around them, and therefore predisposed to depression, anxiety, and the overuse of food, alcohol, and other substances as a numbing/coping/grounding mechanism? YES!

WHAT:
There's a lot of information out there to help support people with energetic sensitivity and natural clairsentient ("psychic feeler") tendencies, yet much of it teaches avoidance and the need to shield oneself from dangerous narcissists or energy vampires. I come from a different approach, one that doesn't make it about anyone other than you. My techniques are much more self-supportive and empowering.
After many years of learning and practicing (and continuing to do so), I'm very happy to share what I've discovered to be helpful. Whether or not you take on the identifier/call yourself an empath or highly sensitive person, the majority of us ARE empathic. We absorb so much from our environment, both consciously and unconsciously. We are surrounded by a constant flood of content everywhere we turn. In this way, most everyone would benefit from practicing these techniques and learning how to "come home" to their own energy. Because, truthfully, we are of no help to anyone when we are depleted. If we want to assist others, if we want to enjoy our own life experience beyond merely surviving it, then we need to take care of – and feel grounded within – ourselves first.
